When Cole (18) discovers that his cheerleader girlfriend, Toni (17) has betrayed him, he dumps her. To spite her, he leaves early for college. To alleviate her pain, the naïve Toni then explores a relationship with an alcoholic bartender, Victor Tibliano (30). Although Toni believes she is curing Victor of alcoholism, in stealth, he continues to drink and exhibit abnormal behaviors. Only after Victor seduces Toni does she become aware of his psychotic actions. Toni cares deeply for Victor, but she is still in love with Cole. Toni learns that she is both pregnant with Cole’s child and that Victor continues to drink. When she attempts to sever their relationship, Victor unleashes his true nature and assaults her. Toni knees him in the groin and runs for her life. Toni then visits the gravesite of her parents where she makes a vow to herself and her unborn child to never again be victimized. In frustration, Victor takes out his rage by strangling a kitten with his bare hands. He then storms off to find Toni with his father’s gun in tow. The action culminates on prom night. Cole chooses to return to become a husband and father. Cole returns from college to make up with Toni. He exits the plane wearing a tuxedo; he carries a teddy bear and engagement ring – intending a surprise prom proposal. The prom is in full swing. Victor lures Toni outside the venue by delivering a message (via another prom attendee) that Cole is waiting for her in the parking lot, but it is Victor who waits to make his final attack. Victor drags Toni out back to a dumpster and strangles her. Cole arrives at the prom with John. Victor and Toni struggle; she is knocked unconscious. Cole leaps on Victor. They struggle. Victor reaches for his father’s gun. There is a gunshot. Cole lives. John shoots Victor, dead. Toni survives. Cole slips the engagement ring on Toni’s finger. Her eyes open slightly. The couple becomes a microcosm of tender forgiveness and love through whispers and tears. The ambulance doors shuts. |
